17-Day Training on Bamboo & Value-Added Products

As part of the Livelihood and Entrepreneurship Development Programme (LEDP), The Hub Jorhat and Bosco Institute began the first phase of implementation by organizing awareness camps around the Bosco Institute campus. Interested women registered for the training, and their details were shared with The Assam Cooperative APEX Bank, Jorhat, to assess their CIBIL scores and eligibility for future credit support

Following this process, the first batch of 30 participants was finalized, and training commenced on April 2, 2024. The program featured a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Under the guidance of Mr. R.K. Kalita, Scientist and Head of the Extension Division at ICFRE Rain Forest, Jorhat, trainees were introduced to bamboo as a resource - its varieties, uses, preservation techniques, and safe handling.

Participants were trained to create a wide range of bamboo products, including pen stands, trays, cups, water bottles, wall hangings, and drinking glasses, crafting a total of 22 distinct items. They learned techniques such as cutting, shaping, sanding, polishing, and varnishing, with all safety protocols carefully followed throughout.

The training also included entrepreneurship modules facilitated by Mr. Pankaj Baruah from IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, covering branding, pricing, market dynamics, and business strategies. To strengthen credit awareness, Mr. M. Buragohain, Branch Manager of The Assam Cooperative APEX Bank, conducted a session on accessing bank loans and navigating credit linkage.

An exposure visit to ICFRE Rain Forest, Jorhat, gave participants hands-on insight into bamboo preservation, bamboo charcoal, briquettes, pickles, structures, and furniture. Mrs. Runumi Borthakur from ICFRE led the sessions, including a tour of their nursery housing 52 bamboo species
Support also came from the District Industries and Commerce Centre (DICC), Jorhat, whose representative conducted a session on relevant government schemes for entrepreneurs.
